Jerusalem—Bayt al-Maqdis—recurs in travel, jurisprudence, and history writings. A classical geographic text such as Ahsan al-Taqasim by al-Maqdisi al-Bashshari shows care for field observation. At a later stage Mujir al-Din in Al-Uns al-Jalil offers rich material on the city’s fabric and institutions in his time.
How do we enter the text?
A document is read with its date of writing, its author, and the context of its keeping. An architectural description from the fourth century AH is not projected onto the building as it stands today without scrutiny.
