How gates are read as entrances, functions, and urban signs—not merely decoration on the wall.
A gate is not only an opening in the wall; it is a point that organizes movement, trade, and symbolic passage. Damascus Gate in the north, Jaffa Gate in the west, Lions’ Gate in the northeast, and other gates complete the visible wall system of the Old City.
What do we notice at the gate?
- Position in the wall and geographic direction.
- Size of the entrance and its relation to market or road.
- The common name and other names in the sources.
- Contemporary use: daily passage, not mere relic.
The visible form of many of these gates is linked to wall works in the Ottoman period in the sixteenth century CE, over older layers. Assigning every stone to its era needs archaeological and architectural research—not a quick glance.
