How Do We Read Jerusalem’s History without Reduction?

A proposed method for multiple historical layers: the standing landmark, transmitted account, and modern inference.

Jerusalem is a city of layers. Responsible reading separates three things: what is a standing landmark that can be described, what is a transmitted account in the sources, and what is modern analysis. Mixing them produces easy reduction and weak understanding.

Practical steps

  • Name the landmark as it is today.
  • Return to a source that describes a specific era.
  • Do not project an old description onto the present building without scrutiny.
  • State what you do not know.

Reduction is easier than understanding, but it is among the weakest forms of knowledge.
