The visible walls of the Old City are linked to the works of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the tenth century AH / sixteenth century CE. Modern studies commonly place the building years around 1537–1541. The year shown here is for remembrance—not to fix the day the last stone was set.
What do we see today?
The wall is an urban frame that includes gates still in use. Beneath it are older layers not all visible to the walker. So we distinguish «what we see» from «what the archaeologist verifies».
