Ethics of the Jerusalem Visual Archive

A brief study of limits on image use: accuracy of description, refusal of misleading framing, and respect for the source.

An image is a document and a responsibility. A caption that says «Al-Aqsa» on a frame showing only part of a courtyard or a particular building confuses the reader. Ethics here begin with precise naming.

Limits of educational use

  • Describe what actually appears in the frame.
  • Do not imply that a historical image represents the present without stating so.
  • Preserve source rights.
  • Avoid images presented as if they were verified portraits of a person without evidence.
