Special File: How Do We Read a Jerusalem Landmark?
A five-step method for architectural and cultural reading: name, location, layer, meaning, and the limits of what we know.
This file is an educational tool that can be used before any landmark: a dome, a gate, a market, or a wall.
Five steps
- Name and use: What is it called today, and what was it called in the sources?
- Location and its relation to what surrounds it.
- The visible historical layer and what needs a specialist.
- The cultural meaning in circulation without exaggeration.
- The sources we rely on and what we do not know.
The fifth step is the most neglected. Admitting incompleteness is part of the method, not its weakness.

Apply the steps to landmark cards in the guide, then move to the references. The method begins here and does not end here.
