The Dome of the Rock is attributed to the works of the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, and its completion is commonly mentioned in historical-architectural writing around 72 AH / 691–692 CE. Why is the dome remembered in daily memory?
Because it formed—and still forms—one of the most prominent visual elements in Jerusalem, and because it is part of the Al-Aqsa compound: neither a substitute for it nor a shortening of the whole Haram.
